Real-Time Economic Dispatch of CHP Systems with Battery Energy Storage for Behind-the-Meter Applications

The use of combined heat and power (CHP) systems has recently increased due to their high efficiency low emissions. Using CHP in behind-the-meter applications, however, can introduce some challenges. Firstly, the system must operate load-following mode prevent export grid. Secondly, if load drops below a predefined threshold, engine will at lower temperature hence efficiency, as fuel is only half-burnt, creating significant aforementioned issues may be solved by combining with battery energy storage (BESS); dispatch BESS optimised. Offline optimisation methods based on prediction not grid errors. Therefore, this paper proposes real-time Energy Management System (EMS) using combination Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks, Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), Receding Horizon (RH) control strategy. RH strategy suggested reduce impact errors enable implementation EMS exploiting actual generation demand data day. Simulation results show that proposed method operational cost 8.75% compared offline method.
